Leader: We continue our Lenten “season of recovery” as we focus on heal as essential to our spiritual lives.

Leader: God gathers us as a Beachcomber gathers and marvels at every precious surviving piece of beach glass she finds.

Leader: Let us acknowledge our need to restore, repair, renew our Holy Vessels, which include the communities of which we are a part. Let us pray:

You created us for each other. You set in us a yearning for companionship and an empathy that binds us together, protecting each other and delighting in one another. Yet too often we have broken down our relationships instead of building them up. We have been set against one another with the lie of scarcity. We have built systems and economics that widen the gap of resources rather than safeguarding equitable practices. Too many, and growing numbers, are suffering hardship, food insecurity, joblessness. We cannot fathom the proportions of loss and so we look away, sometimes even from the need in our own community. Help us, Healer. Show us our empathy. Forgive our complacence. Move us to move one step at ta time toward greater care for one another. We sense and acknowledge our yearning for wholeness praying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for the covenant which you have opened to us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Accept these offerings with the dedication of our lives, that we may be for the world a sign of your abiding love and a testament to your enduring promise. In Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God. Prayer of the Day

In your love, make us whole.

Hymn: We Are Called to Be God’s People

We are called to be God’s people, showing by our lives his grace,
one in hart and one in spirit, sing of hope for all the race.
Let us show how he has changed us, and remade us as his own,
let us share our life together as we shall around his throne.


We are called to be God’s servants, working in his world today;

Scripture: Matthew 8: 5-13

When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour.

Questions to Ponder:

  1. The centurion (army commander), a non-Jew, is not a part of the community of Jesus followers. The servant for whom he is advocating is a gentile and a slave, “the ultimate nobody.” Yet Jesus responds to them. What sort of imaginary boundaries do we have when it comes to the Body of Christ or Kingdom of God?
  2. In what ways does our community (church, city, region, state, country) create boundaries?
  3. In what ways are we living out the Kin-dom in which all people come together around the table of God?
  4. How are we, through the power of Jesus Christ bringing healing and wholeness to our communities? If we are not, what do we need to start doing?
  5. Do we believe that through Jesus, we can bring healing to our communities?

Whom shall I send to loosen the bonds of shame and greed?

Call to Worship

Leader: Each of us is created a precious and holy vessel of embodied love. We have been through a harrowing time since last Lent that has shattered our sense of wholeness- body-mind, and spirit- like a glass vessel fractured into pieces. Let us enter a Lenten “season of recovery” as we focus on Jesus, the Healer of our every ill.

Leader: Beach glass begins as something whole and yet discarded. As it tumbled by the sea, it is broken and polished until it becomes a treasured “mineral gem.”


People: We do not embrace that suffering is necessary or God-given, but that suffering a part of life.


Leader: When pain comes and brokenness enters our lives,


People: Jesus reaches out to touch and remind us


Leader: of the Treasure that we all are-

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer
Leader: Lent developed into a season of intense inward reflection and confession centuries after the life of Jesus. Yet, as we will see, Jesus encouraged people to open up about their lives- to speak truth- no matter how broken. This is the beginning of compassion for ourselves and others. It is the beginning of healing. The Latin origins of the word “confess” is to “study and acknowledge.” This will be a season of studying how we can be a healing presence in our community. To do this, we acknowledge our need to restore our own Holy Vessels. Let us pray:

Creator God, we are bodies fashioned by your hand in your own image, shapes and colors of diverse and immense beauty. And yet too often we have ignored the sacred nature of our physical lives. The Holy Vessels you have fashioned are tired and suffering, ravaged by months of disrupted rhythms and ailments. Our fragility has come into full view and we are frightened. We cannot fathom the proportions of loss and so we look away, sometimes even from our own needs. Help us, Healer. Show us our strength. Forgive our inertia. Move us to move one step at a time toward greater care. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Scripture: Matthew 8: 1-4; 16-17

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself ot the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

That evening they brought him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Questions to Ponder:

  1. Not many of us have gone through something so dramatic as to be completely socially exiled, physically healed, and reintegrated into the community that, for so long, feared and shunned us. Can you imagine why this man would want to back to the temple?
  2. The worship community, despite its shortcomings, must have offered something to this child of God that he could not find somewhere else. What kind of hope and healing do we come to religion seeking?
  3. How are we reaching out to people in pain?
  4. Jesus’ touch of the leper was an outrageous act. By doing it, he signaled that these people were not outside the kingdom of God, but that they are family, worthy of touch. Who is missing in our communities? How do our local rules (in church and in our towns) include or exclude people who long to belong?
  5. We are all treasured by God. We are beautiful and belong. How can we help people feel this deeply?

restore my home, remove my fear and bring me peace again.

Cleanse me, blood of Jesus, bake bitterness away;
let me forgive as one forgiven, and bring me peace today.

Questions to Ponder:

  1. Often this scripture talks about worry, but today I want you to ponder your value according to this scripture. What are some ways that your value is communicated in this passage?
  2. Verse 26 states “Are you not more valuable than they?”- When was a time you felt valued?
  3. What makes you feel unvalued?
  4. By what authority does someone assign value to you? Media (TV, advertisements), People’s opinions, comparison… where do you look for your value?
  5. How can you lose your value?
  6. Do you not know, have you not heard… YOU ARE VALUABLE! God sees you as valuable.
  7. What does it mean to seek God’s kingdom and his righteous ness first?
  8. Now let’s look at our neighbors. Do they have value? (of course!!!!)
  9. How are we communicating that value to them in our everyday interactions with them?

Scripture: Ephesians 1:11-14 (MSG)

11-12 It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

13-14 It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This down payment from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.

Ephesians 1: 11-14 (NIV)

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Questions to Ponder:

  1. Who are you and what are you living for?
  2. The scripture says: long before you knew Christ, he already knew you and had a purpose for you. What sort of feelings does this bring up for you?
  3. When we put our faith in Christ, you are “marked with the Holy Spirit” as a member of God’s family. How does this influence your everyday (Sunday through Saturday) living?

4-5 Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Be very sure now, you who have been trained to a self-sufficient maturity, that you enter into a generous common life with those who have trained you, sharing all the good things that you have and experience.

7-8 Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.

9-10 So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.

  1. In the eyes of God, who are you and what work have you been given?
  2. Take some time to write out the God-given qualities of “You”.
  3. What are some examples of a “self-sufficient maturity?”
  4. What have you planted in your life?
  5. What is you would like to plant?
  6. What changes do you need to make in your life to plant “in response to God”?
  7. Are you tired?
  8. How does the community of faith give us encouragement and energy to continue?
  9. Challenge: Reach out to someone this week to encourage them. If you need encouragement, reach out to someone for encouragement.

  2. These Psalms were written by David. What do you remember about David?
  3. How does your knowledge of David change the words of the Psalm you are reading?
  4. Which phrases give you hope?
  5. What are some praises of God given in both Psalms? How can you use these words to give praise this week?
  6. Which phrases trouble you?
    “Psalm 62 ends by saying, ‘God you repay to all according to their work.’ Some of us may find that statement unsettling. Would you rather have God treat you with payment you deserve or with the grace that you hope for in Jesus Christ?”
  7. If you were to write a Psalm (a song or a prayer) to God this week, what phrases would you use? Take some time to write a song or prayer to God.
  8. Which are some of the promises that you can cling to this week?

Gospel Text: Mark 1: 4-11

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased.”

Questions to Ponder:

  1. What does baptism mean to you?
  2. What is the difference between baptism with water alone (John’s baptism) and baptism with the Holy Spirit (baptism into Jesus)?
  3. Why is it still important to use water in baptism?
  4. What does water mean in your daily life?
  5. What difference does the Holy Spirit make in baptism
  6. What difference does the Holy Spirit make in your daily life?
  7. This is one place in Scripture where we have the Triune God together (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). How are they Three and yet One?
  8. When we are baptized, we make promises to God, to self and to our fellow believers, which promises do you remember?
  9. In the Book of Common Prayer’s Baptismal Covenant, the celebrant asks the whole membership (body of Christ) a series of theological questions to affirm and remember in their baptized lives. The last question is appropriate for these stormy days: “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?”

May we respond as the people are asked:

“I will, with God’s help.”
